The village…
The house is situated a 10 minute walk from the pretty village of Eyeries, with it’s brightly coloured houses, shining out like a beacon. Eyeries has a very strong community at it’s core with most of the houses being lived in by full time residents. There are two pubs, two shops, a post office and a restaurant in the village. In season, Evie, also opens up her tea shop, which is not to be missed with her home made cakes and blackberry jam from fruit that her brother in law picks from the hedgerows.
The food…
Really good food is abundant on The Beara. With such a beautiful sea view it is hard not to be inspired to have a fish supper every evening. The most local source is the fish counter in SuperValu, Castletown. It is small, but everything is super fresh and if you go in regularly you will see there is a great variety to what they offer. There are several markets that offer locally grown produce. Just outside Bantry is Manning’s Food Emporium that sells everything for those passionate about food from wine to Cheese, Bread, Charcuterie etc etc etc!!! They also have wonderful food to sit down to enjoy onsite with really good wine. If you are coming in via Cork city The English Market is well worth a visit with every comestible needed to provision a holiday.
Pubs…
Our favourite offsite outings are for walks in the ethereal Knockatee woods and on to O’Sullivan’s Pub at Tousist for local crab sandwiches and a Murphy’s. We also love a visit to the world renowned, McCarthy’s Bar in Castletown which is like no where else and if you’re lucky you’ll find yourself settled into the snug at the front. McCarthy’s also does good food and has folk music evenings.
The outdoors…
The ring of Beara walk goes passed the house down by the sea, you can go for short walks to the point and over the common land behind the house. There is a longer ring walk if you bear right from the house along the coast. You will come to a newly built, little harbour. At this point turn right and a track will take you away from the sea and up towards the village of Eyeries. You can then walk through the village and back down to the house. If walking is your reason for coming there are many walks that will have you out all day and everyday. Either down by the sea or up in the hills, inland.
